Narcissus Poeticus Recurvus
Narcissus Poeticus Recurvus is supposed to have been one of the first daffodils cultivated in ancient times, and this is the latest and most fragrant one to flower here. More and more are been seen of these in fields and along roadsides so they are good for naturalizing. The yellow centre cup with a red fringe and the late blooming period are good ways to identify this flower.
This variety is over 100 years old and will flower in late May, after many narcissi have been and gone. They are a beautiful pure white reflexed perianth, with an orange-red cup. They are often chosen because of their ability to naturalise well, creating large clusters or groups.
When buying narcissi Poeticus Recurvus for landscaping in woodland areas ensure you allow sufficient spacing for future bulbs and flower development.
Interesting Note: Also known as the poets daffodil and pinkster lily it is widely accepted that this was one of the first daffodil species to be cultivated and is widely grown throughout Britain.
