Boston Bulbs was very pleased last week to donate 15,000 flower bulbs to Ian Farmer, the Partnerships and Sustainability Manager at Boston Borough Council.
Ian represents Boston Borough Council for the annual "Boston in Bloom" project. Boston in Bloom is part of the annual competition "East Midlands in Bloom", which is in turn one of the 18 regions and nations which together make up the "Britain in Bloom" campaign which is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Winners represent East Midlands in Bloom in the UK Finals, where they compete against the winners from 11 other English regions, along with winners from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
East Midlands in Bloom is organised by the East Midlands in Bloom regional committee, and is a voluntary, non-profit-making organisation that covers six counties - Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.
According to the East Midlands in Bloom website, the aim of the competition is "to encourage the improvement of our surroundings through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping. It also aims to achieve a litter free and sustainable environment."
The website goes on to say that "using the whole community to get involved many communities have reported the following benefits:-
- Increase in civic pride through local people taking on the planning and management of their environment
- Long term improvement in their local environment through planting floral displays and improved cleanliness
- A boost to the local economy through increased tourism
- Regeneration of disadvantaged areas
- Stimulation of voluntary work and co-operation between community groups
- A means to address issues such as sustainability, recycling, minimising waste and conservation
Commenting on the event, Boston Bulbs managing director Gary Huggins said: "Boston Bulbs has donated bulbs to the Boston in Bloom event for the past three years, and is very proud to sponsor our home town in such a worthwhile community event.
"We are overjoyed that Boston has been awarded gold in the competition in the last two years, and hope that Boston continues with its winning streak for the 2018 event."
We received a nice mention on Boston in Bloom's Facebook page at the end of last week:
