allium nigrum var purpureum
Allium Atropurpureum resembles a fine claret withs its dark wine-red colour and looks amazing planted in amongst roses and shrubs, in containers or sunny beds. They are easy to grow bulbs that are increasing in popularity. They look wonderful in cut bouquets and make a unique accent in any perennial border or bed.
When in full bloom the flowers attract a multitude of insects and bees. For more details visit the RHS link on our image or visit our advice section and read "plight of the bumblebee" an in-depth look at the disaster facing our native bees.
When buying allium bulbs for landscaping Spring beds and borders, it is important to make sure the bulbs are of flowering size and that the prices are truly wholesale.
Interesting Note: With bee species on the decline in the UK due to intensive farming and disease it is essential that we try and protect what remains an important part of our eco-system. Bees and insects are responsible for pollinating the majority of the worlds crops, so a small wild flower spot in the garden will help build up bee numbers.
